On the Lunar New Year of 2019, the excitement was tempered by the continual media coverage of the murder of a 22-year-old female in Biên Province, which gained a lot of public interest due to its intricate circumstances. At first glance, the kidnapping and murder of 22-year-old Cao Thi My Duyen, who was helping her mother sell chickens at a nearby market, seemed like a typical but heartbreaking case of this kind of crime.

On February 2, the leader of a gang, Vi Van Toan, told his gang members that the mother of a student owed him almost a total of VND300 million (USD13,043) for buying about four packs of heroin.
