John Evander Couey, 46, abducted, raped, and murdered 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford in Homosassa, Florida, on February 24, 2005. In 2007, Couey, a convicted sexual offender, was convicted and sentenced to death. The case of Jessica Lunsford led to the enactment of Jessica’s Law, which imposes harsher penalties on sex offenders and more stringent monitoring upon their release from prison.
Mark Lunsford entered his 9-year-old daughter Jessica’s bedroom on February 24, 2005, in order to turn off her alarm clock. However, upon entering the room, Mark was shocked to discover that Jessica was absent. Mark, who had spent the previous night at his female friend’s residence, began to panic. Mark went to the police after being unable to find Jessica at her residence.
