Chronological Events
A massive fire broke out on February 18, 2003, at Jungangno Station, Daegu Metro Line 1. The incident was started by Kim Dae Han 56-year-old unemployed former taxi driver. Kim Dae Han had suffered a stroke in November 2001 that left him partly paralyzed. Kim was dissatisfied with his medical treatment and had expressed sentiments of violence and depression.
At that time, Kim Dae Han was planning to kill himself. However, he wanted to kill himself in a crowded place rather than alone.
Kim boarded train number 1079 from Banwoldang Station to the end of Ansim Station at 9:53 a.m. local time carrying two cartons of milk filled with gasoline. Once inside the train, he tried to light a cigarette lighter that he had been carrying. Other passengers tried to stop him, but in a struggle, one of the cartons spilled, and the spark of the lighter grabbed the spilled gasoline.
